about

For the woman whose closet got away from her.

The Grainline is a one-woman studio reading closets by hand — for the women I know best: the ones in their thirties and beyond who are running households and careers and everything in between, and who looked up one day to realize their closet stopped making sense.

Alex, founder of The Grainline
who this is for

If you're still showing up — and your closet isn't.

You moved into your thirties — or your forties, or further — with a different life than the one you'd been dressing for. The job changed. The body, maybe. The schedule got fuller, the standards got higher, the time you have for any of it got shorter.

Somewhere in there, the closet got away from you. Pieces you used to love don't quite go with anything. The thing you reach for has a stain on it. You're buying clothes more often than you'd like to admit and still feel like you have nothing to wear.

None of that is a personal failing. It's what happens when a wardrobe accumulates one purchase at a time, in stolen minutes, without anyone — including you — sitting down to look at the whole.

The Grainline is for women who are tired of that loop. Who want someone to read what they already have, name what's actually working, identify the small handful of pieces that would let the rest of the closet finally click into place, and help them spend on purpose from here forward — so that what they buy adds to outfits instead of just adding to the pile.

what the audit does

Read by hand. Written for you.

When your intake arrives, I read it twice — once for the practical answers, once for what you didn't quite say. Then I spend time with your closet: every piece you've cataloged, in the order you uploaded it, the way I'd flip through a well-loved book.

The audit itself takes two to four hours of writing, usually across two sittings. I draft. I leave it. I come back and cut what was clever but not useful. What you receive is the version that survived a second read — written in the same voice I'd use over coffee, with the math done.

You walk away with a clear read of what you already own, a short list of pieces (often eight to twelve, sometimes two, occasionally none) that would make your existing wardrobe function as a closet, and a way of thinking about future purchases so the loop stops repeating.

a few promises

What you'll never get from me.
